Take every opportunity to give your body exercise. You will begin to lose weight walking. You will begin to improve the energy circulation in the whole body. It is a good way to begin your journey in healthy living and to maintain healthy blood pressure.
I have done lots of trekking in the Himalayas. It is extraordinarily scenic, and the breathtaking Himalayan landscape is different around every corner - it is definitely an added bonus to walk this route.
The Himalayan trek I recommend covers the 18km route from Gangotri to Gomukh. The elevation of the path varies between 10,000 feet and 13,000 feet, so it's similar to traversing the top slopes of Mount Rainier in Washington State.
We do this 36km return trip on foot, all within 36 hours. We all did lose lots of weight ! This trek is combined with a few other minor treks on other routes. You have to really go on one of these walks to experience it. By the way, this is not so difficult, as it is a very gradual slope upwards. So do try some trekking...
Walk for Health
In fact, walking is not just a great way to help you shed off that extra weight but is also an easy and effective way to improve on your overall physical fitness and feel good, as it improves blood circulation and increases energy levels. This comes without straining the body too much.(don't miss a personal story, which is given below ).
To benefit from walking, it is important that you start at low speeds and increase it with time.
For example, when getting started, you could walk for about thirty minutes each day at a speed of 2.5 miles an hour. You will notice immediate benefits and as time goes on you will find yourself increasing not only your speed but also the length of exercise.
Improve your metabolism by Walking !
Perhaps an important benefit that you gain from walking is its ability to improve metabolism. You might gain weight because of slowed metabolism, and walking allows the body to burn up calories not only during your walk, but even many hours later.
When you create a daily walking program, your metabolism obtains a daily boost and excess weight will soon be a thing of the past.
In addition to improving metabolism, walking has the added benefit of improving the health of your digestive system. You will start eating better and feeling healthier.
With some programs, the body feels starved after exercise and you could easily find yourself eating excessively which does not help you lose weight. Walking induces sweating which is not only a good way to cleanse your body but also encourages you to drink lots of water.
Lose Weight Walking - reap maximum benefits
When you embark on walking to help you lose weight, you must remember that you are in it for the long term and do not be deluded by quick or instant results.
Begin your walking exercises with short walks (about 30 minutes) at slow speeds (about 2.5 miles an hour) for five days. Increase both speed and time in the second week. When you continue this trend for a month, you will notice positive results.
The important thing about walking as a weight loss program is to make it regular. The body will benefit greatly if, for example, you decided to walk at least one hour every day.

Here is a personal story:
My sister Kay had a heart transplant in July 1998. She made a very good recovery, and was able to go for long walks for the first time in her life.
This poem was written in September 1999 about a 10 mile walk we took together through an Irish forest park. Kay has continued her fitness programme and especially likes to walk in the hills.
Unexpected light breaks through sometimes,
Even when we are least expectant:
Terrible burdens might be lifted,
If only we could pause to notice !
Such was the exuberance,the openness
Of a thousand doors long slammed shut,
So unlikely, so irrational did it seem
To see such strength beyond the weakness.
Beginning the happy acceptance
We walked the forest's pensive ways,
And mused upon the former days
When limitations seemed so final.
On we go, pressing for the goal,
Accepting no barriers or distractions.
Oh yes, the views from here are glorious,
But warmth in your heart speaks volumes.
