It is interesting to understand how the heart works. Keep your heart healthy and strong with exercise and it will perform like a wonder organ !
Heart - Circulatory System
The heart plays a major role in the human body.
Your body system needs some basic things like oxygen and sugar in order to survive. It also needs to collect and dump waste in order to maintain a clean system.
Delivery of these requirements and disposal of waste is mainly done by the circulatory system.
Heart Like A Pump
The heart is one powerful pump that sends blood throughout your body to maintain life. Yes, your heart is a pump! What do you do with a pump? You most probably have one in your home and whatever function you use it for, at some point you have had to repair it because it got clogged, broke down due ware and tare or because it developed some mechanical problem.
To understand better how your heart works, just image it is a pump.
The heart too needs good maintenance in order to function properly. Just like your local mechanic, you need to know how the heart works in order to know how well to maintain it. Remember you need a strong heart to pump blood throughout the entire body system.
The circulatory system is made up of a wide network of arteries, veins and capillaries. They carry blood throughout the body providing nutrients such as oxygen and in exchange collect wastes like carbon dioxide.
So how is your heart able to beat continuously? An electric system inherent in the heart tissues regulates all the activities of your heart. It produces electrical pulses or signals which help walls of the heart to contract and when this happens, blood is sent out of the heart to the circulatory system with mighty pressure. Once blood leaves the heart, it can not flow back through the same vessels but rather flows in one direction. This is directed by valves situated at certain points within the circulatory system.
The heart beat as we know it is a result of complex events taking place in your heart. After the heart has contracted, what follows is a relaxation stage. A complete cycle of contraction and relaxation of the heart as it pumps blood constitutes the heartbeat. Each heartbeat is controlled by the electrical signals described above and its rate is determined by events and needs in the rest of your body.
As blood flows from the heart to the circulatory system, it carries the nutrients and oxygen required for the body to function normally. On its return from the various parts areas of the body, it collects carbon dioxide and takes it to the lungs for excretion through air in exchange for oxygen.
Healthy Food And Exercise
The functions of your heart are so important that you need to maintain its health well. It is what keeps your whole being working and failure to maintain it may bring catastrophic consequencies. If the heart fails to carry out its functions due to some other reason like injury or heart disease, other organs of the body will not receive enough nutrients and oxygen which in turn impairs their function. In addition, waste carbon dioxide will accumulate in organs and its acidic nature in tissues may lead to further deterioration.
It is good to understand how your heart to enable you to take care of it. Feed the heart with the right foods and exercise the heart muscles ! You will appreciate it better, once you know how your heart works.
