The reason I purchased this book by Mark Hyman was because I had been on lisinopril for my high blood pressure – which is a drug that does have some quite horrific side effects. The worst thing for me though was that you can not get pregnant if you are taking this because it can cause serious damage to your unborn baby, it could even be fatal - and I wanted to try for a baby. My weight and blood pressure were already high enough hurdles to overcome before I could think about becoming pregnant, so I looked to this book for some help.
My blood pressure was high because of my lifestyle, I was overweight, smoked and the only exercise I got was walking to the front porch to collect my pizza from the delivery boy! When I realized that I wanted to become a Mom I knew that I had to do something about my lifestyle, I'd let things slide for too long and had become reliant on drugs to treat a disease that I was perfectly capable of managing for myself.
The book walks you through the five “forces of illness” which the two authors say underlie the majority of modern diseases, they are: malnutrition, impaired metabolism, inflammation, impaired detoxification, and oxidative stress. It offered a holistic, whole body approach to getting myself well – so I wasn't focusing on only one issue, I was treating everything at the same time. For the first time in many years I felt like I was in control of my own health and was able to do something positive about it.
After six weeks I felt marvelous! I had lost some weight and I was taking regular exercise, I had managed to give up cigarettes and my blood pressure was falling, I had reduced my medication by half.
