I already knew the kind of format and style of the “For Dummies” books so when I saw they had one on cholesterol I bought it! The information in these books is always up-to-date and written by experts in their field, so for getting all the facts in a easy to understand way you can't beat a Dummie's guide. It is written with lots of humor thrown in and you can sense the author is a real person with a passion for the subject.

The book describes what cholesterol is, how it forms in the arteries, the consequences of this and what you can do about it. It is not a diet book, so if you are looking for low cholesterol recipes then you should buy a book like the Low-Fat, Low-Cholesterol Cookbook by the American Heart Association. Controlling Cholesterol for Dummies is more concerned with educating and explaining about cholesterol.

In just one book you will find everything you need to know about cholesterol, and more! It runs through some of the more popular diets like the Atkins, and discusses the pros and cons of each from a cholesterol point of view – so you get a good overview of which diets are best for you if you are following a low-cholesterol regimen. There is also a section that tells you what the healthy range for cholesterol is, and how your age, sex and even ethnicity might be a risk factor. And there is a formula you can use for working out your BMI so you can tell if you fall within the healthy weight range for your body size.

Whether you know nothing about cholesterol or whole lot about it, this book will serve its purpose to educate. It is filled with lots of details about cholesterol and the dangers of having high LDL cholesterol.

I found the tips on eating the right foods really useful, and the top ten lists are a quick and handy reference, for example there are lists of the top ten foods that raise your cholesterol and the top ten that can lower it.

This is a fantastic book which you don't have to read from cover to cover - it can be used as a reference book where you can just dip in and out as you wish. I think it is well worth buying because it gives you all the information you need to beat high cholesterol.
